Useful For

Determining ABO group and Rho(D) type and for ruling out hemolytic disease of the newborn due to ABO incompatibility or due to atypical IgG antibodies in the mother.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Cord blood or whole blood

Container/Tube: Pink top preferred (K2 EDTA), Purple top,  or Cord Blood red top

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Specimen Pediatric Volume: 1 full, lavender-top (EDTA) Microtainer

Collection Instructions:  Do not centrifuge. Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly.

Specimen Rejection: Gel tubes are not acceptable.  Specimen must be labeled properly.  This test is affected by gross hemolysis.

Note: If specimen being drawn may be used for a possible transfusion, refer to test  LAB276 TYPE AND SCREEN for banded specimen collection instructions and blood product transfusion instructions.
