Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Semen

Collection Container/Tube: Sterile container

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic container

Specimen Volume: Total ejaculate

Collection Instructions:

  1. Patient should have 2 to 5 days of sexual abstinence.
  2. Entire ejaculate is best collected by masturbation. (A special condom [supplied by physician] is acceptable.)
  3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.
  4. Maintain specimen at body temperature (37° C) and forward promptly.
  5. Complete special collection instructions below and send form with specimen.

*Note: Post Vasectomy testing only determines if sperm are present or absent.  Other semen analysis tests (motility, etc.) may only be performed on specimens received within 30 minutes of collection.

Reference Values

No sperm observed 6 weeks to 3 months post vasectomy.
