Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Fresh raw stool
Container/Tube: CLEAN VIAL (White top vial with no added preservatives)
Acceptable: Sterile container
Specimen Volume: 5 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions:
- Collect liquid or loose stool.
- Transfer stool to container.
- Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection.
Specimen Rejection:
1. Stool contaminated with urine or water
2. Stool in preservative/fixative
3. Stool collected in a diaper

Additional Information
- Fecal samples from breast-fed infants should not be used with this assay.
- Specimen optimal when obtained during acute phase of infection (5-7 days).
- Patient should avoid recent antibiotics or x-ray contrast material, antidiarrheal medications, antacids, bismuth, or oil instillation.

Negative
A positive result indicates the presence of elevated fecal lactoferrin released from fecal leukocytes (WBCs) as a marker of intestinal inflammation.
