Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma or serum
Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel), red top, or gold top
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: 

  1.  Patient should be fasting. 
  2. Spin down and refrigerate serum/plasma within 2 hours of collection.

Specimen Rejection:

1.  Grossly hemolyzed samples will be rejected.

2.  Samples with extremely high total protein concentrations will be rejected.
 

Additional Information

Samples with extremely high total protein concentrations are not suitable for use in this assay. Hyperproteinemia can be found in Lymphoma, bone marrow disorders such as multiple myeloma, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), Waldenström macroglobulinemia, plasmocytoma and amyloidosis.
