Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Urine

Container/Tube: Clean container

Specimen Volume: 25 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect a freshly-voided, random urine collection.

2. No preservative.

3. Refrigerate specimen after collection and send specimen refrigerated. Centrifuge before analysis.

Cutoff concentration: 200 ng/mL (0.2 µg/mL)

The results from this test can be reported qualitatively as negative or positive relative to the 200 ng/mL cutoff level for barbiturates. Positive results indicate that the specimen is likely to contain barbiturates. Negative results indicate that either the specimen does not contain barbiturates or that barbiturates are present in concentrations below the cutoff level of 200 ng/mL.
Results of this test should always be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical presentation, and other findings.
