Useful For
- Chloride helps regulate the balance of extracellular fluid distribution.
- Decreased chloride levels can be seen with reduced dietary intake, prolonged vomiting, reduced renal reabsorption, and some forms of acidosis and alkalosis.
- Increased chloride levels can be seen with dehydration, kidney failure, some forms of acidosis, high dietary or parenteral chloride intake, and salicylate poisoning.

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Plasma or serum
Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel), red top, or gold top
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions: Spin down within 2 hours of collection. Do not allow serum to remain on the cells after centrifugation.
