Specimen Requirements

Three specimens are required.

 

Type and Screen

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Pink top preferred (K2 EDTA),  or Purple top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 6 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 3 mL

Collection Instructions:  Do not centrifuge. Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly.

Specimen Rejection: Gel tubes are not acceptable.  Specimen must be labeled properly.  This test is affected by gross hemolysis.

 

CBC with Automated Differential

Note: Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw. 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA) or lavender top (EDTA) Microtainer

Specimen Volume: 4 mL

Collection Instructions:  If there is a delay in transport of >24 hours, refrigerate specimen and send specimen refrigerated.

 

Hepatitis, Syphilis IgG and IgM, and Rubella

Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Red top or gold top
Specimen Volume: 5 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 3 mL
Collection Instructions: Spin down within 2 hours of draw and remove serum from cells.
