Useful For

  • Assessing bone health. In children, severe vitamin D deficiency leads to rickets.
  • Vitamin D deficiency is associated with muscle weakness, falls and fractures, and  secondary hyperparathyroidism.
  • Vitamin D deficiency with an elevation of PTH can result in osteomalacia, increased bone turnover, reduced bone mass and risk of bone fractures.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Red top, or gold top
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Specimen Rejection: 

  1. Grossly hemolyzed samples may be rejected.
  2. Samples should not be taken from patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (i.e. > 5 mg/day) until at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration.
