Test Code LAB318 Platelet Function
Useful For
- Determining the cause of, or the potential for excessive bleeding
- Evaluating the ability of platelets to adhere and aggregate
- Monitoring the presence and effectiveness of antiplatelet medications (such as aspirin)
Methodology
Automated/Platelet Plug Formation
Profile Information
Test Component |
Available Separately |
Always Performed |
---|---|---|
Epinephrine/Collagen Screen | No | Yes |
ADP/Collagen Screen | No | No |
Testing Algorithm:
An epinephrine/collagen screen is performed. If the screen is prolonged, then an ADP/collagen screen will be performed at an additional charge.
Performing Laboratory
Bozeman Health Laboratory Services
Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive and be performed within 4 hours of draw.
Specimen Type: Whole blood
Container/Tube: Blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)
Specimen Volume: 2 Full tubes
Collection Instructions:
- All investigations of platelet function are strongly dependent on the correct method of blood collection. Venipuncture should be performed using a 21 gauge or larger needle.
- Immediately after draw, gently invert both tubes several times to mix blood with additive. After initial mixing, avoid agitation or rotation.
- Discard the sample if there is a venous collapse or stoppage of blood flow during collection.
- Do not centrifuge.
- Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not transport specimen in pneumatic tube system. Specimen must be hand-delivered to Bozeman Health Laboratory Services.
Specimen Rejection: Hemolyzed samples will be rejected.
Specimen Transport Temperature
Ambient
Specimen Stability
Specmen Type | Temperature | Time |
---|---|---|
Whole Blood (unspun) | Ambient | 4 hours |
Reference Values
COLLAGEN/EPINEPHRINE
94-193 seconds
COLLAGEN/ADP
71-118 seconds
Additional Information
- The collagen/epinephrine test is used to detect platelet dysfunction induced by intrinsic platelet defects, von Willebrand disease, or exposure to platelet inhibiting agents (such as aspirin).
-
The collagen/ADP test is used to determine if an abnormal collagen/epinephrine result may have been caused by the effect of aspirin or medications containing aspirin.
