Conventional Gram Stain procedure.  Body fluids will be concentrated by cytospin.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen source is required.

 

Specimen Type: Fluid

Container/Tube: Syringe with needle removed, anaerobic transport vial, or screw-capped, sterile container

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Using needle and syringe, aspirate fluid.

2. Transfer aspirated fluid to vial or container.

3. If submitting specimen in syringe, remove needle and cap syringe.

4. Label vial/container/syringe with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

 

Specimen Type: Solid tissue

Container/Tube: Anaerobic transport vial or screw-capped, sterile container

Specimen Volume: Adequate amount

Collection Instructions:

1. Aseptically collect material.

2. Transfer material to vial or container.
3. Label vial/container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
 

Specimen Type: Varies

Container/Tube: ESwab, Copan swab

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Prepare site and obtain specimen.

2. Return swab to transport tube and cap tightly. If using an ESwab, break the swab shaft at the breakpoint indicated by the colored line and discard the remaining shaft.

3. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
