Specimen Type/Requirements
Pinworm Collection Kit
The best time to collect the specimen is immediately upon arising in the morning. Specimen should be collected prior to beginning therapy. Do not shower or bathe, have a bowel movement, wipe or clean the rectal area, or apply ointment to the skin in the rectal area until after collection of the specimen.
- Label the pinworm collection container with the patient’s name and date of birth.
- Hold the paddle by the cap and remove it from the container. The paddle has one “sticky side” for pinworm ova collection. The ova will stick to the adhesive.
- Separate the buttocks and using moderate pressure, press the sticky side of the pinworm collection paddle (marked ADH) against the skin around the rectum 3 or 4 times.
- Insert the paddle into the pinworm collection container and tighten the lid.
- Wash hands thoroughly after collection.
- Label the specimen with the date and time of collection.
- Return the specimen to the laboratory. The specimen should be left at room temperature.
