Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Synovial fluid

Container/Tube: Lavender top (liquid EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: Indicate specimen source.  Forward to laboratory promptly.

Specimen Rejection: Clotted samples will be rejected for a cell count.

Testing includes appearance, color, nucleated cell count, and differential:

 

Normal synovial fluid is a clear, slightly straw-colored, viscous fluid, which lacks fibrinogen and cannot clot.

 

Neutrophils: 0-25%

Lymphocytes: 0-75%
Monocytes: 0-70%
