Testing Algorithm:

If hemoglobin is low and MCV is elevated, then vitamin B12 and folate will be performed at an additional charge.

If hemoglobin is low and MCV is low, then ferritin, iron, and TIBC will be performed at an additional charge.

If hemoglobin is low and MCV is normal, no further testing will be performed.

Specimen Requirements

Whole blood and serum/plasma are required.

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 4 mL

Specimen Pediatric Volume: 1 full, lavender top Microtainer

Collection Instructions:  If there is a delay in transport of >24 hours, refrigerate specimen and send specimen refrigerated.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma or serum

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel), red top, or gold top

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: If there is a delay in transport of >8 hours, freeze specimen in plastic vial, and send specimen frozen.

Precautions: Do not order on patients who have recently received methotrexate or other folic acid antagonist.

Specimen Rejection:

1. Unfrozen specimen >8 hours old

2. Grossly hemolyzed specimens will be rejected.
