Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation:  Patients with hemorroids or menstrual bleeding should not be considered for testing, however, they may be tested after such bleeding ceases.

Specimen Type: Stool
Container/Tube: Occult Blood Kit

Specimen Volume: Adequate amount
Collection Instructions:

  1. Collect stool in a clean cup or collection paper provided in the collection kit.
  2. Open green-cap bottle by turning to the left and pulling upwards.
  3. Scrape surface of stool with sample probe covering grooved portion completely with stool.
  4. Insert sample probe in bottle and screw cap on tightly to the right. Do not reopen.
  5. Label bottle with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
  6. Place bottle in envelope provided in kit and forward promptly.

Specimen Rejection:

1. Urine, gastric, or other body fluids

2. Stool contaminated with toilet water

3. Stool collected in a diaper
