Specimen Requirements

 

Specimen Type: Hair

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: 10-12

Collection Instructions:

  1. Using forceps collect affected hairs with shaft intact.
  2. Submit specimen in a sterile container labeled with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Specimen Type: Nails

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions:

  1. Wipe the nail with 70% alcohol using gauze (not cotton).
  2. Clip away a generous portion of the affected area.
  3. Collect material or debris from under the nail.
  4. Submit specimen in a sterile container labeled with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

  1. Cleanse the affected area with 70% alcohol.
  2. Gently scrape the surface of the skin at the active margin of the lesion, being careful to not draw blood.
  3. Submit specimen in a sterile container labeled with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

  • Upon request, susceptibilities will sent to the Fungus Testing Laboratory at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, at an additional charge.
