Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum
Container/Tube: Light green top (Lithium heparin), gold top or red top
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Specimen Rejection:

  1. Hemolyzed samples may be rejected.
  2. Samples should not be taken from patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (i.e. > 5 mg/day) until at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration.

Additional Information

  • Phenylbutazone at therapeutic dosage levels showed interference with this assay (testosterone values increased)
  • Do not use samples from patients under Nandrolone treatment.
  • In isolated cases, elevated testosterone levels can be seen in samples from female patients with end stage renal disease.
  • Implausible elevated testosterone values in women should be verified by an extraction method or a validated LC-MS tandem method.
