Specimen Requirements

Collect specimens as soon after the rash as possible. Collection is optimum day 1 through 3 of rash onset.

 

Submit one of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Throat or nasopharyngeal swab

Collection Container/Tube: Dacron swab in VTM

Submission Container/Tube: Viral transport media


Collection Instructions:

  1. Collect specimen and break off dacron swab into Viral Transport Media.
  2. Label tube with patient’s name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
  3. If transport will be >72 hours, freeze VTM with swab included at -70° and transport frozen on dry ice.
