Specimen Requirements
Collect specimens as soon after the rash as possible. Collection is optimum day 1 through 3 of rash onset.
Submit one of the following specimens:
Specimen Type: Throat or nasopharyngeal swab
Collection Container/Tube: Dacron swab in VTM
Submission Container/Tube: Viral transport media
Collection Instructions:
- Collect specimen and break off dacron swab into Viral Transport Media.
- Label tube with patient’s name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
- If transport will be >72 hours, freeze VTM with swab included at -70° and transport frozen on dry ice.
