Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Neonatal mucosal screen
Sources: Cutaneous or mucocutaneous
Container/Tube: Viral transport media
Specimen Volume: Adequate amount
Collection Instructions:
- Collect specimen using swab contained in Viral Transport Media kit.
- Using 1 swab, swab neonatal mucosal surfaces in the following order: eyes (conjunctivae), mouth, nose and rectum. Place swab in tube of viral transport media.
- Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection. Ship within 48 hours of collection.

- Body fluid or spinal fluid
- Calcium alginate swab or swab with wooden shaft
