Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Neonatal mucosal screen

Sources: Cutaneous or mucocutaneous

Container/Tube: Viral transport media

Specimen Volume: Adequate amount

Collection Instructions:

  1. Collect specimen using swab contained in Viral Transport Media kit.
  2. Using 1 swab, swab neonatal mucosal surfaces in the following order: eyes (conjunctivae), mouth, nose and rectum.  Place swab in tube of viral transport media.
  3. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection.  Ship within 48 hours of collection.

Specimen Rejection:

  1. Body fluid or spinal fluid
  2. Calcium alginate swab or swab with wooden shaft
