Collection Container/Tube: Dacron swab in VTM

Submission Container/Tube: Viral transport media

Specimen Volume: Entire recovered specimen
Collection Instructions:

1.  Wear a mask and gloves.

2.  While wearing gloves, massage the swollen gland for 30 seconds prior to collection (this may be mildly uncomfortable for the patient, but necessary to get accurate test results).

3.  Rub the swab on the inside of the buccal cavity for 1 minute.  The buccal cavity is the space near the upper rear molars between the cheek and the teeth.  Swab the area between the cheek and gum by sweeping the swab near the upper molar to the lower molar area.

4.  Place the swab into the viral transport media.

5.  Carefully break swab shaft at scoreline. Use care to avoid splashing of contents.

6.  Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

7.  If transport will be >24 hours, freeze VTM with swab included at -70° and transport frozen on dry ice.
