Specimen Requirements
Collect specimens as soon after the rash as possible. Collection is optimum day 1 through 3 of rash onset.
Submit one of the following specimens:
Specimen Type: Throat, nasopharyngeal or nasal swab
Collection Container/Tube: Dacron swab in VTM
Submission Container/Tube: Viral transport media
Collection Instructions:
- Collect specimen and break off dacron swab into Viral Transport Media.
- Label tube with patient’s name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
- If transport will be >24 hours, freeze VTM with swab included at -70° and transport frozen on dry ice.
Specimen Type: Urine
Container/Tube: Clean container
Specimen Minimum Volume: 50 mL
Collection Instructions:
- Collect a random urine collection.
- Label tube with patient’s name, date and actual time of collection.
- Centrifuge urine at 2500xg for 15 minutes at 4° C.
- Resuspend sediment in viral transport media.
- If transport will be >24 hours, freeze VTM with swab included at -70° and transport frozen on dry ice.
Note: CSF may be submitted in meningitis/encephalitis-suspect cases with prior consult. Call the main laboratory at 414-5010.
