Additional Codes

ARUP Test Code: 3003005 TP HPV PCR

Methodology

Qualitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Useful in detecting HPV infection in males. This test amplifies DNA of 14 high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer and its precursor lesions (HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68).

Performing Laboratory

ARUP Laboratories

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Anal canal

Container/Tube: ThinPrep vial

Specimen Volume: 3 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL

Collection Instructions: Collect anal specimen with brush or spatula from ThinPrep kit and place in PreservCyt Media.  Label container with patient name, DOB, and source of specimen.

Laboratory Shipping Instructions: Transfer 3 mL (1.5 mL min) of specimen to an ARUP standard transport tube and send to ARUP refrigerated.

Specimen Rejection:

1.  Frozen samples

2.  Bloody or dark brown specimens

3.  Specimens collected in any media other than indicated above

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated

Specimen Stability

Specimen Type Temperature Time
ThinPrep Vial Ambient 6 months
  Refrigerated 6 months

Reference Values

Negative:  DNA nucleic acid sequences specific for HPV genotypes 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52 , 56 , 58, 59, 66, or 68 were NOT detected.  Sensitivity may be affected by specimen collection methods, stage of infection, and the presence of interfering substances. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with other available laboratory and clinical data. A negative high-risk HPV result does not exclude the possibility of future cytologic HSIL or underlying CIN2-3 or cancer.
