Specimen Requirements

Specimen type: Fresh raw stool

Container/Tube: CLEAN VIAL (White top vial with no added preservatives)

Acceptable: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: 10 g

Specimen Minimum Volume: 5 g

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect liquid or loose stool.

2. Transfer stool to container.

3.  Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection.

4. Return specimen to the laboratory ASAP.  Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of collection.

6. DO NOT FREEZE unless greater than 24 hour delay in processing

Specimen Rejection:

1. Stool contamination with urine or water

2. Stool collected in PVA, formalin, or ETM preservative

3. Stool received in a diaper.  For infants and young children, a sample may be obtained from a soiled diaper (if necessary).  Place stool from diaper in a collection vial before sending to the laboratory.

Additional Infomation

  • Specimen is optimal when obtained during the acute phase of the infection (5-7 days).
  • Patient should avoid recent antibiotics or x-ray contrast material, antidiarrheal medications, antacids, bismuth, or oil instillation.
