Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Specimen Type (Preferred): Preserved stool in Protofix CLR

Container/Tube:  Clear Protofix CLR vial containing 5 ml of Protofix CLR

Specimen Volume: 5.0 ml

Collection Instructions:

  1. Collect liquid or loose stool.
  2. Place enough stool in the transport media to reach the "FILL LINE" indicated on vial.
  3. DO NOT overfill the transport or dump transport media out.
  4. Carefully break up the specimen and swirl the contents until thoroughly mixed using the spork attached to the cap.
  5. Label vial with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection.


Specimen Type: Unpreserved stool

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Collection Instructions:

  1. Collect liquid or loose stool and transfer to container.
  2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection.
  3. Return to the laboratory within 2 hours. 


Specimen Rejection:

1. Stool contaminated with urine or water

2. Stool collected in ETM or PVA preservatives

3. Frozen stool

4. Stool collected in a diaper

5. Unpreserved stool >2 hours old.

Additional Information

  • Three specimens are recommended, collected 24 hours apart.
  • Specimen is optimal when obtained during acute phase of infection (5-7 days).
  • Patient should avoid recent antibiotics or x-ray contrast material, antidiarrheal medications, antacids, bismuth, or oil instillation.
  • Ova and parasite exams ordered on a patient who has been hospitalized more than 3 days requires a consultation with Microbiology before processing.
