Specimen Requirements

 

Specimens must be collected with an APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit:

 

Specimen Type: Rectal

Container/Tube: APTIMA Unisex Swab Collection Kit vial

Collection Instructions:

  1. Insert specimen collection swab (blue shaft swab in package with green printing) into rectal canal.
  2. Gently rotate swab clockwise for 10 seconds in rectal canal to ensure adequate sampling. Remove swab.
  3. Remove cap from transport tube and immediately place specimen collection swab into tube.
  4. Carefully break swab shaft at scoreline; use care to avoid splashing contents. 
  5. Re-cap swab specimen transport tube tightly.
  6. Label vial with patient's name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

 

Specimen Type: Throat

Container/Tube: APTIMA Unisex Swab Collection Kit vial

Collection Instructions:

  1. Label vial with patient's name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
  2. Tilt patient’s head back to assist in opening of mouth as wide as possible.
  3. Depress tongue with a tongue depressor so swab doesn’t touch oral mucosa or tongue.
  4. Insert specimen collection swab (blue shaft swab in package with green printing) into throat.
  5. In 1 continuous motion:
    • Swab 1 tonsillar area up then down.
    • Move to back of throat as far down as possible, and swab there.
    • Move to other tonsillar area and swab.
    • Swab behind uvula, and remove swab.
  6. If patient has complained of 1 spot being sore, swab that area well.
  7. Remove cap from transport tube and immediately place specimen collection swab into tube.
  8. Carefully break swab shaft at scoreline; use care to avoid splashing contents.
  9. Re-cap swab specimen transport tube tightly.

Specimen Rejection:

1.  Specimen transport tube with no swab, two swabs, a cleaning swab, or a swab not supplied by APTIMA.

Additional Infomation

  • Both GC testing and Chlamydia testing can be tested on the same sample. Only one APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit is needed when ordering both tests.
  • A negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection. Improper specimen collection, the presence of inhibitors, or low organism yield may cause false-negative results.
