Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma or serum
Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel), dark-green top (sodium heparin), red top, or gold top
Specimen Volume: 1 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:

1. Avoid hemolyzed specimen.

2. If there is a delay in transport of >8 hours, freeze specimen in plastic vial, and send specimen frozen.

3. Label specimen as plasma or serum.

Additional Information: Do not order on patients who have recently received methotrexate or other folic acid antagonist.
