Important Note

This test is only orderable by the laboratory.  To request this test in EPIC, please order BLOD0979 MISCELLANEOUS LAB ORDER.  Fill out appropriate prompts and request the test "Zika Virus PCR".  If you need further assistance, please contact the laboratory at 406-414-5010.

Useful in the screening and diagnosis of Zika virus in patients, particularly pregnant women.

Specimen Requirements

Serum only or serum and urine.  Serum must be submitted with urine.  Additional specimens that are accepted with a consult include CSF and amniotic fluid.

 

Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Red top or gold top
Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: Serum should be collected within 14 days of symptom onset.  Send 2 mL serum  decanted into a sterile screw-capped vial (labeled "serum") and secured with parafilm.  Send refrigerated in a biohazard bag with cold packs.  Ship within 48 hours of collection.

 

Specimen Type: Urine, random
Container/Tube: Sterile screw-capped container.
Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions: Pour off urine into a sterile screw-capped vial (labeled "urine") and secured with parafilm.  Do not submit urine in its original ccollection container (urine cup).  Send 2 mL urine refrigerated in a biohazard bag with cold packs.  Ship within 48 hours of collection.

  • onset date
  • pregnancy status

Note: If PCR testing is negative, Zika Elisa IgM serology testing will be performed at an additional charge, following CDC guidelines.
